I have used kettlebells for about 2 years now with our college & professional baseball players and we have had great success. Unfortunately, you have to have flexibility, good posture and strength prior or else you will get injured using them. Great tool with the right progression and teacher.

Love KB’s!!! I’m a NASM CPT/CES, but use the KB’s almost exclusively. I started training with AOS 3-4 years ago… Then I got a chance to work with Brett Jones,MRKC in the spring of this year and I love Hardstyle. Going to the RKC in September!

They’ve changed my life and the lives of my clients – WE are all stronger and more mobile… Doing things none of us thought possible. Thank you Kettlebells.

Wow Thayne, that must be a record….are you sure you don’t mean 53lb (24kg)? Anything around 200reps in 10mins with the 24kg KB is getting into the top 10for the SSST. 210 reps in 9:50 with a 53kg KB…..you must be part silverback Gorilla. Send a video to Pavel, and he’ll probably give you some sort of recognition/award.

Kettle Bell training is the closest you can get to getting into a fight without throwing a punch. Test you’re manhood with a 10 min snatch test.. If you can snatch a 53 kilo KB 200 times you are a man. My record – 210 snatches 9 min 50 sec… Train Hard, Train Smart!!

    Ilya,

(This recommendation could get me in trouble!)

What to do depends on your priorities — if you want to be hardcore (especially if you want to get certified) you’ll need to do snatches without gloves, but exercise is your top priority with kettlebells the easiest solution is to put on weightlifting gloves.

If you’re doing it without gloves the key is weightlifting/gymnastics chalk. Use a lot of chalk (available cheap from your local sporting goods store, in the weightlifting section). And then wash and thoroughly dry your hands after lifting, and immediately use lotion to remoisturize your hands. Also, as you bring your snatch up, let the handle rotate as freely as possible in the “hook” of your fingers, until the top where you clench your grip and push it against your palm. Then as you bring the kettlebell down let it move off your palm into the hook of your fingers where it can freely rotate. Play with this a little until you get the right feeling — pretty soon the stress on your hands will be a lot less because you’re not gripping the kettlebell as tightly.

There’s also a really great page that goes into a lot of detail here: Kettlebell Hand Care Tools & Tips.

Hope this helps — and stay strong!

    Roy

Beeing doing Kettlebells for a year and a half now after being introduced by a former virgin active trainer Greg Small God bless him. Training regularly on 32kgsI hope to complete my RKC next year.

Totally changed my life, as it requires dicipline and true commitment and also is so addictive and enjoyable.

  27. Posted July 1, 2009 at 9:24 AM | Permalink

I was introduced to Kettlebell training by my pal Kevin Raison (http://www.kevinraison.co.uk/boot_camp.html) over a year ago. 5 stones lighter and a helluva lot fitter I’ve now bought my own and train in the garden for half an hour before going to work each day…

I used to train in the gym and pay a fortune for gym membership each month. I’ve subsequently cancelled this, given up barbell and dumbell training and replaced it with kettlebells and have seem my waist get thinner and my wallet get fatter.

I’m also fitting a solid chin-up bar to the wall and am on the verge of getting some Indian Clubs. Core training rocks and makes you stronger, fitter, healthier and lighter than running around like a hamster in a wheel on a treadmill!!

4 minutes of intense tabata swings with a kettlebell in the garden is worth half an hour of boring laborious treadmill jogging any day in my book…

Bring on the Kettlebell revolution…!! :-)

I started developing joint pain and stiffness last year as a result of ulcerative colitis. At the worst point I literally was stiff and/or in pain from my neck to my ankles. Kettlebelling three times a week keeps the pain totally away.

    And I’m developing abs. :)

ive been doing kbs since jan 09, they are here to stay with me, i have crossed two 10kg dumbells at home mainly to practice jerks, obviously not quite the same,
any tips or advice much appreciated, i am interested also in anyone fairly new to kbs and the diferrence they have made to your fitness and life

*** From Roy — Ed, I have to say since I’ve discovered kettlebells they’ve continued to give me better physical results (better fitness, better body shape) in less time than any workout I’d ever tried before. Hopefully you can find the right deal on kettlebells for you to pick one up for home. What finally tipped me over the edge is remembering that they’re a lifetime investment — a quality kettlebell should be with you as long as you’ve got the life in you to swing it! – Roy

I first saw KBs on a local news health spot with Andrea U-Shi Chang of Kettlebility. Then I found a trainer, near me who was also certified in Z Health, R Phase. In a few short weeks the weakness from a C section and the havoc losing one’s core strength produces are resolving. Pain that didn’t respond to treatment or management is 75% gone. I was declared okay to pick up my first KB, only a 4 kg/9 lb and almost kissed it after the first workout. Just did my second workout and worked with some of the heavier KBs today.

Last week when I tried the windmill, my body just couldn’t comprehend the right posture. Today I did really well. I can only guess what the future holds. Having been bed bound and an invalid for several years and then mostly sedentary for a few more while raising my 3 yo daughter as a single parent, I’d only prayed for this kind of result. Now, I’m imagining being well enough to perform a perfect Turkish Getup. I need to repair and heal my body and lose 185 pounds to reach my goal. I’m still nursing so low calorie diets are out. I can’t say how relieved I am to finally have found a way out of physical and emotional despair and a method to reach my health goals.

*** From Roy — Illyeanna, what a story! Keep it up and the changes and improvements will continue to happen. Congrats on finding both the will and the way to make a difference in your life. Your daughter especially will thank you! Roy
